He liked Heidi. More than that, he liked Heidi with Nathan, but he knew too much had happened to make that possible. Too much pain and turmoil, and Mom's interference while Nathan was helpless to stop her had been the proverbial last straw. Maybe Nathan couldn't see how guilty she was, but he had. He had dreamed it, and he'd be damned if he was going to help her get another chance to mould the boys without Heidi's stabilizing influence.

But now, Nathan was talking about suing for custody and he was sure that was a recipe for disaster. Bring courts and lawyers into the mess, and it would hurt Heidi. It would truly turn her against Nathan and put Simon and Monty in the middle. They would end up hurt, becoming weapons for both sides in a situation that should never get that far. And once Nathan took them away from Heidi, Mom would be free to try her little games all over again with a new generation.

He knew all of this -- knew it without a doubt; a cold, sick feeling flooded him every time he thought about it. All he wanted to do was have the two sides discuss shared custody -- amicably and without dragging the lawyers into the mix. But he couldn't make Nathan believe his intuition. Nathan was too logical for that -- Nathan needed proof.

And so he'd offered a way to find some. He would use Isaac's ability to try to draw the outcome, and whichever method seemed to have the best one would be the one Nathan would try first. If it turned out that the lawyers and divorce court seemed to work best, he would step back and let Nathan do it, despite all of his misgivings. And if it turned out that speaking to Heidi and just asking nicely would work best, he hoped Nathan would let him help.

Concentrating on the situation, he pulled out his sketchbook and pencils. Images were already filling his vision, and as his eyes clouded over he started sketching quickly. Time passed, marked only by the sound of pencils on paper. Finally, he set down the sketchbook and shook his head, his eyes clearing and the cramp in his hand healing as soon as he put his pencil down.

The first sketch showed a quiet scene -- Nathan sitting on a sofa and Heidi sitting in a chair near him, with the boys sitting between them, laughing and playing with some kind of action figures. His drawing abilities weren't the best, but it looked as if both Nathan and Heidi were smiling at the boys, and he realized he was grinning as he looked at the sketch.

The second sketch was just the opposite -- the background was sketchy, but obviously a courtroom, where some sour-faced woman in an expensive suit led the boys away from Heidi. Simon tried to look back at his mother, and Monty was crying. The look on Heidi's face nearly broke Peter's heart, and the grim look on Nathan's face made him feel things had got just as ugly as he had suspected they might. There was one last element that had been missing from the first sketch: their mother stood off to one side, looking down at the boys with a look of smug satisfaction. The entire picture made him uncomfortable, as if he could feel all of the pain and distress those depicted felt, and it was all he could do to keep from tearing it up.

He'd known all along what he would see, but hopefully this would help Nathan come to a sensible decision. He put the pencils away again, then picked up his phone and dialed his brother. When the phone went to voice mail, he rolled his eyes -- it seemed his brother was always busy these days, and maybe that was another point he could use to argue for an amicable joint custody discussion. But for now, he just left a message, telling Nathan he had some things to show him, and to call him when he was free. Then he ended the call and tucked his sketchbook back into his messenger bag. There wasn't anything more he could do about it until he talked to Nathan.
