2.17. Half of writing history is hiding the truth. -- Serenity

I'm a freedom fighter, or America's Most Wanted, depending on what side of the line you fall on regarding the rights of Specials in this fine country of ours.

The government thinks I'm the most dangerous terrorist there is, and in so many ways they're right. But to others of my kind -- to those terrified of discovery, or those already found and locked away in Homeland Security facilities that make high-security prisons look like summer camps, I'm their hope for freedom and a normal life.

They're both right, but they're also both so very wrong. None of them have any idea what I really am. As far as I know, only one other person out there does know, and he's not about to tell anyone. It would damage him so badly if anyone ever were to find out.

Sometimes...

Sometimes I think I should declare the truth to the world, let them see how badly he's lied to them all. Sometimes I think it might possibly be enough to start to turn this disaster of a world around.

But most of the time I realize that all it would do is ruin him, and despite all that he's done -- despite all the pain and horror he's brought down on us -- I can't do that to him. He's my brother. We were as close as two people could be, and my god, I still love him despite the hypocracy...

So we both perpetuate the lie and I continue to play my role, and all the lives saved will never measure up against all those lost...

1.18. “We're all pretty bizarre. Some of us are just better at hiding it, that's all.” -- The Breakfast Club

"You know," Peter said softly as he stretched, then curled back against Adam, "I'm not even sure how many abilities I have... I mean -- I obviously picked up DL's ability, or we never would've escaped. But he was yards away from me at Kirby Plaza. Him, and Molly and Micah. I didn't come into direct contact with any of them, and they weren't actively using their abilities, but I got it anyway."

"Hmmn... quite true," Adam mused, stroking a hand lazily through Peter's hair.

"So, I could be passing people on the street, picking up powers left and right and never know it... After all, most of us don't look any different from them..."

"I guess we'll have to see if you exhibit any new abilities in stressful situations."

"What are you planning on doing, sneaking up behind me and yelling 'Boo!' when I'm not expecting it?"

"That would be telling, my dear boy," Adam answered with a little smirk. "Besides, what kind of a test would it be if you knew it was coming?"

"Well, there is that." Peter grinned and added, "What I really need to do is run into someone with the ability to spot us in a crowd of normal people."

Adam grimaced. "You realize that ability would make you the most sought-after one of us all, right? Even more than you are already. The Company would want you, the government would want you, and that bastard serial killer would never rest until he found you..."

"Or the person I got the ability from," Peter said with a frown. "Maybe we'd better hope no one out there has that one."

"Good plan. Safer to hide in a crowd; just blend in, be one of the masses..." Adam leaned in to nuzzle his jaw, and Peter let out a purr.

"Just be normal like everyone else -- or something like that?" And then all thoughts of detecting other specials melted away as Adam's nuzzling moved lower...

There's something going on in the world. Humans are evolving at an accelerated rate -- people with special abilities are turning up, more and more every day. I'm one of them... Some people fear us, some hate us, and some want to destroy or control us. We just want to live our lives and be happy, just like everyone else.

I'm Peter, and I can do amazing things. I have friends who can stop time, teleport, read minds, heal, fly... But we're still people, just like everyone else out there. We still get hurt, we still love, we still cry, we still have families. And we're going to do whatever we have to do to be able to live our lives safe and free...
