after this

The partying and dancing ran long, and Peter stayed through the whole thing, only getting home at some crazy hour of the morning after talking, dancing, and talking some more with many of the attendees.

At some point after their dance, Adam had drifted off to be the attentive godfather, giving Sark and Baileigh a chance to enjoy the party. He wasn't really surprised to find his lover still hadn't come home, figuring he was still with them. As much as he hated sleeping alone these days, he flopped into bed and soon fell asleep, although sometime during the night he wound up hugging Adam's pillow.

When he woke around midday, however, Adam still hadn't returned, and a quick text to Baileigh told him that Adam had left "hours ago." He checked his voice mail and e-mail again: nothing. Checked the fridge door, in case Adam had taped a note there: nothing. Finally, standing in the living room and frowning, he called Adam's phone.

And heard it ringing.

In the kitchen.

Damn it!

He looked around the apartment again, worry nibbling at the back of his mind. It had been quiet lately but that didn't mean they didn't have any enemies left out there. But he soon discovered that not only was there no sign of a struggle -- there was no sign Adam had even come home after the wedding.

He frowned, standing in the middle of the living room for a long moment, wondering if this were all his fault. Had he pushed Adam too hard? Had his lover run off to shore up his defenses and bury all the things he considered weaknesses once more? And if he did, how bad would it be the next time things got to the breaking point?

He could give Adam his space; let him sort things out and reassert his control over his fears and emotions. Or, he could find out where he was heading; chase after him, or better yet, meet him there, and let him know he was loved and wanted.

The former would result in Adam feeling more secure and under control, but might also lead him to believe no one cared enough to go looking for him. In the long run, it would be worse. The latter could leave him still feeling vulnerable, but Peter was certain (and it surprised him how certain he was -- figuring out probabilities like this had never been his strong suit before, but now it seemed to come so easily if he didn't concentrate too hard. Exactly where had that come from?) that it was the better decision overall. Go to him, be there for him, show him he loved him. He nodded to himself, his decision made, and reached out with Molly's ability, looking for Adam.

He raised an eyebrow as he located his lover on the road, heading towards a pretty area on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It was actually a somewhat strange sensation, following him this way; flashes of the road, the trees, the sunlight through the leaves, all flitting across his mind's eye.

He finally pulled his awareness back in, shook himself a little before hurrying to pack some warm clothes (and some lighter ones, since it was the time of year where temperatures fluctuated wildly and he didn't want to be unprepared); made sure his wallet, keys, and sketch book with pencils were all in his messenger bag, and picked up his phone. First, he called his supervisor at the station and managed to get a couple of days off for a 'family emergency' -- he'd worked enough of the less desirable shifts that it wasn't hard to get the time off. Then he sent a broadcast text message to everyone he figured was worried about Adam; letting them know that he knew where Adam was, that he was safe, and that he was heading to join him there for a few days. Naturally, he had to answer a flurry of responses, but he was glad he could reassure them that Adam was all right. Or at least that he was safe.

Then he reached out again and located Adam at the Lake Superior Cabin. He checked the time, then took a deep breath and concentrated, jumping back in time and to the cabin. He had long enough to look around and decide that once again, Adam's taste was impeccable. And then he heard familiar footfalls on the steps leading to the door, the key turning in the lock. He managed to squash the urge to cross his fingers, waited for Adam to enter and hoped that his lover's first reaction wasn't to turn and leave again...

*snuggles Peter tightly* Adam is mostly...stunned. And, yeah, still vaguely fragile& vulnerable. But so so glad he came. I still don't know when/how to get him home. *facepalms*
